wing! – HOLD THEM TO IT
wing! is a UK electronic producer releasing through South London’s Memorials of Distinction. “HOLD THEM TO IT” is out now, the first preview of his second EP, “(WORTH SCANNING FOR)”, due July 15.
The track opens in trip-hop territory, slow and ominous in a way that recalls early Portishead, before shifting gear entirely and charging into a breaks-heavy finish. That structural move, from controlled unease to full release, is what makes it work. The credits tell their own story about how it was built: bass from Kai Charlton, drums from Joe Willkillick, mixed by sulk.r, mastered by Patrick Fitzgerald. For something that reads on paper as club-adjacent electronic music, it has a lot of live texture underneath it, and that tension between the organic and the programmed is where it earns its keep. I wasn’t expecting the shift in the second half to land as hard as it does.
wing! has also confirmed a three-date residency at Avalon Cafe in Bermondsey, South London, tied to the EP release.
